Yes.. Ford did do it with the Thunderbird... The Cougar..(YUK!) and
twice with the Mustang... does the Mustang II ring a bell.. can we
expect a Camaro/Firebird II...

True for the Thunderbird and Cougar, though the current Cougar based on the
discontinued Ford Mondeo, Contour, Mystique platform is being discontinued
after 2002.  However, not true for the Mustang II.  There was no gap.  The
Mustang II, 1974-1978 a true hold your nose car was a place holder between
the large 1971-1973 Mustangs and the Fox platform based Mustangs of 1979 to
present.  It's basic platform was a (don't scream to loud) a Ford Pinto with
initially only a 4 or 6 cylinder engine.  In 1975-78 a V8 was available,
along with the gaudiest plastic panelled model, the King Cobra.  It got
better in 1979 with the redesigned Mustang.
