Dr. Lyn Miles, UC Foundation Professor and Chantek Foundation
President, has received $7,860 from the Great Ape Project-USA for
a Great Ape Personhood Survey, a program that will conduct a quantitative
and qualitative study on the issue of great ape personhood.

Dr. Miles will direct this project, which seeks to investigate and
understand what kinds of people are willing to grant limited degrees
of personhood to great apes. The Great Ape Personhood survey will
determine how the issue of gender, education, occupation, college major,
region and other factors influence a person’s willingness to grant
great apes personhood. In addition, this survey will also seek to
understand how factors such as language ability and emotions factor
into how the general public attributes personhood to an animal. This
study will use written and telephone surveys, as well as focus
groups, to explore the issue of personhood with participants from the general
public and UTC’s student body.

This research exemplifies UTC’s commitment to advanced scholarship in
anthropology and social sciences. Congratulations to Dr. Miles, and good
luck with the success of this project!
