Paul Shurtz, Director of the Cadek Conservatory of Music, has received
$10,000 from the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) for the
second year of the ten-year String Project. This project seeks to
continue the development of string music education programs in Hamilton
County schools by providing private string instruction to interested students.

The String Project unites UTC with Allied Arts of Chattanooga, the Community
Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, the Chattanooga Community Impact Fund and
other community-based foundations to reach up to 350 students in local
schools.

Only 13 local schools offer string instruction programs; the String Project
addresses the need for more string music education programs by providing
private instruction for any child interested. Grant funds provide “loaner”
instruments to lower income students and leased instruments for middle and
higher income students who participate. This project seeks to draw UTC music
majors into the music education track by providing them with hands-on teaching
experience in string instruction before they become student teachers in local
schools.

The continued funding of this project echoes UTC’s commitment to teaching
and community service in local schools. Congratulations to Mr. Shurtz on
receiving this grant.
