Ms. Sandy Cole, Project Director in the Center for Community Career
Education,
has received $413,186 from the U.S. Department of Education for the
second year of a five-year GEAR UP program in Bradley and Walker Counties.
GEAR UP concentrates on helping at-risk children in grades 7-12 enhance their
academic and life skills for success in college and life. GEAR UP provides
enrichment-based services including career planning, life skills,
cultural diversity, healthy lifestyles, mentoring and other
support services. Each student receives an individual
graduation plan to improve school completion rates and success in
college.
GEAR UP serves schools in Bradley and Walker Counties with the highest
numbers of financially disadvantaged students, including Rossville and
Trewitt Middle schools. The extended funding of the GEAR UP program
brings together UTC and the surrounding communities to help recognize
the importance and improve the educational and social services for
at-risk students.
Congratulations to Ms. Cole on this important project!
