Perhaps the most interesting thing about dBase from the "Ashton-Tate
Corporation" is that the company was originally a one-man company. Tate,
who's now deceased, simply made up his partner, Ashton, as well as the
corporation. Otherwise, with all deferences to Ted, Ashton never existed.

And when Tate went to release his first version of dBase in 1980, he labeled
it "dBase II" just to give it some credibility and a history it didn't
otherwise have. Who says HP marketing doesn't still have a thing or two to
learn?
