that appears to be a *feature* of listfile.....   (jeff v?  :-)

the type of file (fixed-length, variable, bytestream) doesn't seem to make any
difference -- you always get that leading space.

well almost.  once i removed the leading space from each line of 'filelist'
(in the above example) -- then tar was perfectly happy and made the correct
tarball.  many thanks! :-)         - d
