Try the following:

Supposing that the DSLINE to the remote machine had been done as follows:

:DSLINE X=rmthost.domain.org
:remote hello ....

Then do the following:
:Remote file x=tmp:$back
:remote echo setvar remote_eof !![finfo("ZAP","eof")] >*x
:XEQ tmp
:if remote_eof > 7000 then
....
...

That should do it!!
