Greg,
for linux questions.. these are the best places i have
found:
http://linuxnewbie.org/
http://linuxcentral.com/
http://www.linux.org/

and you are not alone, linux is difficult mainly
because of all the different variations. i use RedHat,
7.2 at the moment. and as an example, i've been trying
to install Oracle 8i Enterprise and the install has
failed a number of times. it turns out that Oracle used
the 2.1 kernel on their install, but most flavors of
linux now use the 2.2 kernel.. and the difference is
significant. to get Oracle installed i have to
*rebuild* my kernel back to version 2.1 !! not a minor
alteration to the OS for a newbie!

thanks,
eric kundl
