Or define your own Cobol "class" in the SPECIAL-NAMES paragraph of
the CONFIGURATION section, such as

CLASS  TRUE-ALPHABETIC     IS  'A'  THRU  'Z'    'a'  THRU  'z'
CLASS  ALPHABETIC-UPPER  IS  'A'  THRU  'Z'.
