Is 'IF CHARACTER-STRING(1:1) IS ALPHABETIC' elegant enough?
of course this would include spaces, you may want to use 'IS NOT NUMERIC' instead.

Hello,
Is there an easy way, in COBOL, to determine if the 1st character of a string is not a letter (A-Z)? I see how to do it "brute force", but I was hoping for something a little more elegant.
I apologize for the newbie question, but my COBOL skills were never strong and they're rusty besides...
TIA,
Art Frank
