Minor nitpick, it was MPE V/R.
MPE V/P was the pre-disk-cache pre-extended-CSTX-firmware for all
classics since the Series-III.
MPE V/E had disk cache and [sort of] extended CSTX, and required an
"upgrade" of the existing base (40->42, 44->48, 64->68) machine.  The
actual hardware component was initially optional (read: short supply)
but was required to support a LANIC.  I remember because we ordered
a 44->48 upgrade without the extra memory and new processor card for
a considerable amount of money, and what I received was a new FOS tape
and a shiny new nameplate carefully packed in bubble-wrap.
