Can only vouch for this on laserjet 5n, 4050 & 4100 with special paper in
the fold-out tray one, and plain paper in tray 2 (also in tray 3 for the
printers that have one).
Configure the printer so tray 1 mode is 'cassette' and type is 'color' or
'preprinted' (or anything EXCEPT 'plain'). Make tray 2 & 3 'plain' --they
will switch if either is emptybut nothing will switch from or to tray 1.
Use an environment file to send esc&l4H to select tray 1 for the special
forms (that's &-small-ell-4..). For plain paper, send esc&l0H
(small-ell-zero...) in setup file or env-file (I have it EVERYWHERE except
the places where I want to force tray 1). It might be possible to
accomplish the same with 'intray' commands in npconfig, but I haven't tried
it.
(Multiple printers in npconfig with different setup files should work in
theory, but I am more comfy with env-files and just one 'device' per
physical printer -- multiple ldevs can fake out the spooler's priority
scheme and give more chance of low-pri output to one ldev sneaking in
between hi-pri files for the other ldev. I don't use an extra ldev except
for printing $stdlists, cause I don't know a way to stick an env-file on
them).
