I fondly remember my HP calculators and I still have a pair of -41s and
some -12s. I misplaced my -16 many years ago and lost my -22 maybe 20 years
ago.

HP abandoned the calculators and I can't remember why. It was sad. The way
you phrase your statement" hp has abandoned calculators and its Jornado,
although iPAQ survives for now..." would lead one to believe you think HP
will abandon the iPAQ in short order. I would respectfully submit to you
that in my opinion, it would take more than a few months for this to happen.
It was almost a given HP would select the iPAQ over the Jornada in its
rationalization of the product lines. The iPAQ is far and away the leader
in the Pocket PC world. It actually defined the format. If you look at any
magazine which talks about Pocket PC or pen computing or whatever mobile or
wireless environment you chose, you will notice the vast majority of the ads
either mention the iPAQ by name or use a picture of it to underline the fact
their product works with it. The ads may also mention the other brands, but
they will always mention the iPAQ.

Also, the latest crop of Pocket PCs are all copies of the iPAQ 3670. They
use the same processors, flash ROM and so on. As I said, the iPAQ created
the format.

The iPAQ has a lot of life left in it, by virtue of the flashable ROM and
the expansion packs. It seems there is not a week that goes by without a
new gadget for the iPAQ, either from HPQ or from a third-party.

Comparing a Pocket PC to a Tablet PC is very much like comparing a
motorcycle to a pickup truck (and the laptop would be an SUV :) ). The
Pocket PC's price point is around the $500-600 area. The Tablet PC will be
in the multi $1000, $2000-$3000. The Pocket PC runs Pocket PC 2002, the
Tablet PC will run Windows XP Tablet, or some such thing. The Pocket PC is
small and light and does not usually have a disk drive (mine does only when
I put in the 5GB PC-card drive.) The Tablet PC will have a disk drive and
will weigh a couple of pounds or more. There are many other differences.

The Tablet PC is aimed at people who do not want to have a laptop, but want
something bigger than a Pocket PC. The PPC gets difficult to use when you
have to do a lot of work. The screen is small and the input is tedious at
best, unless you use an attachable keyboard. On the other hand, I carry my
PPC on my belt and I can pull it out of its case and use it virtually
anywhere. I don't think I can carry a Tablet PC on my belt, without
seriously injuring myself as I develop a list to starboard and crash into
doorjambs. It would also hit other people in a crowd creating some
embarrassing situations. The Tablet PC is an old idea being executed again,
but this time Bill Gates (the fake one) is behind it and really wants it to
succeed. We shall see.

This CNN article, "Calculators vs. PDAs Who wins", compares TI's calculators
with PDAs like Palm. hp has abandoned calculators and its Jornado, although
iPAQ survives for now. But both hp and Compaq were active in the Tablet PC
initiative; it remains to be seen how that will effect Pocket PCs.

As for SATs banning Palms because of IR... when will calculators support IR,
WiFi, Bluetooth, or The Next Best Thing? I'll add this to my list of reasons
why my kids need to know how to use a slide rule...
