Along these same lines, I recently purchased a 'one-time use' heating pad. I
travel a lot and these are a blessing. I certainly can't carry everything I
need in a single case and these are quite compact.

According to the label, these use a iron mixture instead of zinc, and  begin
their reaction in the presence of air. They last about 8 hours which is
nice, and have adhesive to stay in place. Not a fuel cell, but in a way it
is a permutation of the concept.
