Thanks for all replies and advice.

In summary the existance of RESLVCNF disables lookup by HOST.

NSSWITCH may resolve this but currently going down path of adding the
entries in HOST to the DNS server held on PC out on network which should
address immediate needs.

Currently looking DNSCHECK file and will experiment with NSSWITCH.
