Sorry, I guess I needed a bit more clarification.
When you pass cars in America, you can tilt your head left and see down the
road quite a ways.  If you were driving from the right side of the car, you
would have to expose most of your vehicle to get the same view.  The mirror
wouldn't even see what hit it.  It's looking the wrong way.
In the older suburbs, there is enough room for two cars to pass with
parking.  Most people drive down the middle to give more time to spot
children, loose toys, and the like.  You would be in the same predicament
there as well.
