There were several instances in U.S. history where
Generals have listened to their grunt forces.
However, they usually did this to avoid a mutiny or,
in the case of the U.S.-Mexican war, to finish the
war before the contract of their volunteers expired.
(It was either that or extend their contract, I forget
which.)
