Oh dear!  Using Perl will make this much harder.  A couple people have
already posted responses that are based on COBOL.  In COBOL this is trivially
easy.  Me not being a Perl expert though, could you write a little subroutine
in COBOL to do a conversion and then call it from Perl code?  Otherwise you
might get to invent a Perl routine to do this.
