MB suggested that I tack an @ on the end of my listfile command; nice try,
and thanks, but it's not needed and doesn't help - the file's really not
there.  Turns out I ran into a disc limit, so no file!  And my question
should have been:

Does anybody know of a way to make FTP (server, MPE/iX 6.00.2) pass on error
messages or even just error numbers that occur during a transfer?  Even when
using the character-mode MS-DOS FTP client as demo'd below, I got no hint
that anything went wrong with my transfer, other than "hmm, did I misspell
something?" (which forced me to learn a bit of posix find, yada yada, but
not a complete waste)!
