Exactly what David Gale said.

I would add that you really need to pay special attention to the Howmessy
report - especially the columns entitled "Max. Contiguous Blocks" and
%secondaries.

As long as the %secondaries is zero, it does not matter what the
Max.Contig.Blocks colomn shows.

As soon as the %secondaries is greater than zero, any significantly large
no. of max.blocks (say, greater than 100-500) can result in serious
performance degradation when adding master entries (keep in mind that this
adding can be indirect in the case of automatic masters.)

The solution to this situation often lies in simply increasing the capacity
of the master in question.

How much to increase can be a matter of trial and error - but, very
generally speaking, the larger the better.

Other columns in the Howmessy report can also help assess the "health" of a
data base.

For example, inefficient pointers and elongation can signify potential
performance problems associated with detail data sets.

I suggest reading the documentation accompanying howmessy for a more
detailed explanation
