While I personally detest HTML spam email because it:
1) is often very large (12K to 90K per message for HTML spam vs 1K to 4K for
    plain text spam)
2) often has nasty embedded references to their web site that cause a "hit"
their web site if you open their message
3) can include nasty java or vb scripts, particularly if your email package
uses IE to display the message

I also know that HTML email fills a need in internal corporate email. With
HTML email numbers can be displayed in tabular format, in color (gray,
black, green, blue, orange, red), and/or as bold text, depending on data
value so that problems stand out.

Like most everything else, HTML email can be misused and abused, but it
also has many good uses (very few of which have anything to do with marketing).
