Wayne summarizes almost all the reasons that I prefer copylibs over
includes. I, however, have used replacing quite a bit. It's very handy in
cobol when you're dealing with, for example, file structures for things
like current/week-to-date, month-to-date, year-to-date... where the file
layouts are exactly the same. You simply reuse the same copymember
substituting a different prefix. I first came across replacing in an HR
system at Hughes Aircraft that used it extensively to change the prefix on
various file and data set structures.
