This particular vendor was chosen years and years before (before my time also) when our company also had an HP9000 in addition to the HP3000s. That 9000 box has been gone for about 5 years so there was really no need for the 3rd party S/W. When the sales rep would not budge on his $30,000+ upgrade fee, we parted ways. We already had TurboStore/iX 7x24, so why pay for both if the HP product worked? Btw, that vendor has been trying to get our business back ever since...... :-(

I was able to get a backup vendor to significantly reduce the cost of
the upgrade when I pointed out that I could PURCHASE TurboStore Online
for a whole lot less then the cost of the upgrade from a 967 to 979 on
said vendor's normal (not online) version of software. Still kind of
getting screwed on the maintenance side, but the quality of the support
has been great.

Unfortunately, the dreaded "tier pricing" comes into play when moving
licenses, especially if you are going to a more powerful machine. For
example, when we bought our 979/400 (which was too new to be on the used
market at the time), we paid more for the licensing related issues than
for the hardware. I've been through this twice in the last few years, so
I have been through the pain. Some software vendors are great and only
charge a small fee, but others (i.e., one particular 4GL who will remain
nameless and one backup vendor which we ended up dropping and returning
to the TurboStore 7x24 we already owned) charge exorbitant fees! YMMV,
but this is what I've found, especially recently.
