Since the report is coming from CBS, I wouldn't give it much merit. Dan
Rather has been known to insert his foot in his mouth many times for jumping
the gun.
CBS is still trying to be the first and that usually means first with bad
info.
imo: L.A.B.

Propaganda. Whether or not they actually believe the deal has been
approved, I would have expected an announcement like this to attempt to
persuade some fence sitters.

Hewlett-Packard Believes It Won Investor Vote on Compaq Deal
By Cesca Antonelli
Cupertino, California, March 19 (Bloomberg) -- Hewlett-Packard Co. said it
believes it has won investor approval for the $21 billion purchase of Compaq
Computer Corp., a victory for Chief Executive Carly Fiorina after more than
six months of fighting dissident director Walter Hewlett.
Based on a preliminary estimate of shareowner proxies, the company said it
has received sufficient votes to approve the deal, Hewlett-Packard said in a
news release distributed by Business Wire. Official certification of the
results is expected in the next few weeks, the computer maker said.
