According to the NY Times article I posted earlier today, it could take
weeks. Because shareholders can vote as often as they wish, only their last
ballots count. The firm doing the counting must sort through all the
ballots to determine which is the last one submitted for each shareholder.
OTOH, the large institutional investors vote electronically. It could be
that a winner is declared quite soon, if enough institutional shares are
voted one way that can't be overturned by the hand count.
The losing side can ask for a recount, which can add weeks more to the
count. (To save bandwidth, no Florida jokes, please!).
