"Thousands"? More like hundreds of thousands of people hammer the site.

When a URL is posted on   http://www.slashdot.org   the poor server on which the URL is located is buried several meters deep under
requests. This has led to mirror sites being put up by Slashdotters as a public service so the burden is reduced.

BTW, my apologies to the list. I thought the term slashdotted had entered the common vocabulary.
