One of the more interesting things I've seen lately is Fujitsu's COBOL
compiler for Microsoft's .NET Common Language Runtime:

Looks like the runtime (if anything is required beyond the basic CLR) will
probably be free.
The whole Microsoft .NET thing is actually way cool.
And if the Mono project works, you might find yourself with "run anywhere"
