We´ve always had 3 (we got this machine in October)and have not added
memory.
The HP engineer is here and he is saying that it is better to have them in
pairs, that I would be better off if I had four. I know that was true for
the 997 but not for this machine.
What do you think?

No, that shouldn't be any problem.  Why do you ask - did you just add a
third processor or something?  That could provide a clue.  You didn't just
add memory, by chance, did you?
