Dr. David Aborn of Biological and Environmental Sciences has been awarded
a Conservation and Research Grant in the amount of $1,575 from the
Tennessee Ornithological Society. The monies from this grant will fund
his research project, "Migration and Over-wintering Behavior of Sandhill
Cranes in East Tennessee.

Due to an increase in crane numbers at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge, the
Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has listed the birds as a
species in need of management. To ensure proper management decisions are
made, data must be gathered about the birds, including length of stay,
migration patterns and behavior at the refuge. The TWRA wants to work
toward avoiding conflicts between humans and cranes. To help gather
information and work toward the goals of the TWRA, Dr. Aborn, along with
undergraduate and graduate students, will observe and radio-track
Sandhill Cranes at the Hiwassee Refuge.

Congratulations to Dr. Aborn for using real-life situations to teach
students the importance of their studies, as well as allowing them to gain
hands-on experience in their field.
