While it may be outside of my job responsibilities to say this, I hope that
everyone on campus is now aware that locked doors ARE NOT SUFFICIENT to
protect your valuables from theft. Over Spring Break around $400 worth of
technology was stolen from a locked room in Fletcher (this door was very
much off-master, but they apparently broke through the lock easily).

I don't think there's been a week this year in which I did not hear about
thieves making off with hundreds or thousands of dollars in equipment,
typically laptops, projectors, TV's, and VCR's. I'd guess the University
has lost at least $30,000 worth of equipment since the summer. Clearly,
there is ring of thieves operating on this campus who are quite familiar
with where the equipment is located and the best times to go take it. These
criminals have keys to many doors and crowbars or other tools as needed to
break into anything obvious. They are willing to risk going to jail to
steal a VCR when you can buy one for less than $50 at Walmart; they seem to
be confident they can get away with just about anything.

If you have valuable equipment, it should be hidden AND locked inside a
cabinet, drawer, or closet. Take every precaution and report anything
suspicious immediately. As many of us have learned the hard way, there are
no funds to replace the equipment is flowing from our campus in a steady
stream. Don't be the next victim.
