We've just bought several Quantum DLT 8000 drives and had no compatibility
problems with tapes written on our DLT 4000 drives.
A DLT 8000 can read tapes written by DLT 4000s or 7000s. It can also write
tapes for those drives as long as you use the density override to select the
appropriate density for the target drive. I've been able to store files to
a 8000 drive, using a DLT IV tape with the density override set to match a
DLT 4000, and move the tape to a DLT 4000 and restore the files.
