In general, I would prefer to see dot matrix/tractor feed printing done via
serious heavy duty printers like those in the 256x family.  Despite HP's
dropping of support for them (like everything else?) they are still good
rugged machines.  Both serial and parallel interfaces are available for them.
 Thus they can be connected up to external JetDirect devices like other
printers without a built-in network interface.  All 256x printers understand
the level of PCL appropriate for dot matrix printers.

For those who are worried about support buy a spare!  They are cheap.
