I worked for HP as a Systems Administrator for 7 years prior to and during
their first big downsizing in the 80's. It was the CE who originally
attracted me to the company. He was so sharp, so helpful. He seemed to be
proud of the organization he worked for. When our system was brought in,
the first thing he did was crack open the GOLD BOOK and put his business
card in it. The current system configuration was printed out and inserted
in the GOLD BOOK as well. Whenever he was on site, an entry was made in the
GOLD BOOK regarding whatever matter he was attending to. The GOLD BOOK
processes were adhered to within HP while I worked there. After I left HP,
I worked for different software vendors. In just about every shop I went
to, the GOLD BOOK was still sealed in the original cellophane and hadn't
been touched, even though they'd had their systems for over a year (years in
some cases) and the CE's and SE's had been on site frequently. This, more
than anything else, told me a lot about the direction in which HP was
headed.
