Dr. Oralia Preble-Niemi, Department Head in Foreign Languages and
Literatures, was recently named to the International Advisory Board of a
newly established doctorate program in Central America. The
Interdisciplinary Doctorate in Central American Arts and Letters is a
cooperative program among public and private universities, one from each of
the following countries: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala.

Much economic support has been given in the planning stages by the
government of Norway, a country that has been most generous in Central
America's recovery efforts in the last decade.

Prior to being named to this Board, Dr. Preble-Niemi served in an advisory
capacity in the development of this research-based doctoral program. She
will continue to give lectures and master classes now that the program is
under way; and, if schedules or exchanges can be worked out, will teach in
their Central American literature program.

Please join in congratulating Dr. Preble-Niemi on this honor.
