Hi Al,

Technically, no. On the other hand many people
within HP (and elsewhere) *only* use the newsgroup to
read/post messages that end up on HP3000-L because of
the gateway. There are a lot of advantages to using
the newsgroup over getting the list mail directly and
if we stopped the cross-posting I feel we would lose
much more than the spammers. :( As Adam pointed out
in a prior post, the latest "spam" emails that have
appeared on HP3000-L have actually been sent "to"
the list directly and were actually gated over to the
newsgroup, not the other way around. I went back and
looked at each piece of spam that came through the
list since the beginning of the year, and there were
eight (8) such messages. Only one was originally
posted to the newsgroup. The other seven were posted
directly to HP3000-L. Now granted, the HP3000-L@
RAVEN.UTC email address was probably harvested from
the newsgroup originally, but it does show that stopping
the gateway would not stop the spamming of the list.

On the other hand, if the majority of the list members
want the gateway stopped then we will oblige.

Regards,
Michael L Gueterman

Must this list be 'a mirror of a "newsgroup" called COMP.SYS.HP.MPE?

List-server-ignorant here, but this passed mildly annoying last week!
