I'm assuming the message file is being accessed by an application already.
In that case QUAD will be unable to open the file. But the EOF will be
updated and therefore LISTF will show accurate. If I am wrong I apologize.

NOOOOOO!!!!! The file in question is a MESSAGE FILE. That means any reads
to this file are distructive reads. You read a record, poof record is
deleted from the file. Editors will read the contents of the file you want
to edit/view.
