Was that 'roomers' or 'bloomers' or 'both'?

Denys writes:

Denys' story is very close to one of Abraham Lincoln's favorite jokes. Mrs.
Whippley's Boarding House just a few blocks away from the White House was
long suspected of actually being a bordello, and not merely a respectable
rooming house. One day the boiler blew up and a dozen half-dressed men went
running out into the street. Lincoln said, "Roomers were flying!"
