Jon,
I have several concerns about the nature of the balloting.
1) "OpenMPE Board of Directors Popular Vote"
This is not a popular vote, and I, at least, think that it should be.
Many people have a stake in the continuing future of MPE and should be
allowed to have a voice in the electing the directors-- whether their
company can come to consensus or not.
Popular \Pop"u*lar\, a. [L. popularis, fr. populus people: cf.
F. populaire. See {People}.]
1. Of or pertaining to the common people, or to the whole
body of the people, as distinguished from a select
portion; as, the popular voice; popular elections.
2) "Each company...has one ballot to be cast"
It seems odd that a worldwide conglomerate with multiple divisions in
multiple countries, which owns tens if not hundreds of HP 3000s, and has
tens or hundreds of employees working with the 3000 (and probably many
different opinions about whom should serve on the board) would have the
same power to elect directors as some "consultant" sitting out in the
backwaters of Louisiana with an old Series III that he fires up once
every
six months. No offense to Louisiana intended.
3) "If two ballots from the same company are submitted only the first one
will be counted."
So, if I as the CEO of my company wish to cast a vote, but my graveyard
operator was once mesmerized by Birket at a seminar (trust me, it can
happen) and decides to vote for him before I can get my vote in, that's
too bad for me, right? I don't think that's appropriate.
Because I love the 3000 and know a lot of folks for whom it is the only
platform with which they work, I would like the OpenMPE movement to have as
much force as it can. Unfortunately, I don't think things like this ballot
help to lend credibility to the organization or to the concept of a
sustainable, open MPE. Just so you know, I've only recently tried to join
the Yahoo OpenMPE group, and it's possible that a discussion (in which I
could have been involved if I were a member) of how to perform the vote was
entertained in that group at some previous time, but I can't tell since the
archive is private (how about making it "open").
Regards,
Adam Dorritie
