Thanks to all of you who wrote with ideas and suggestions. It turns out we
had an intermittent hardware problem on a disk, which later became
permanent. A quick disk change fixed the problem and we were able to
rebuild the system successfully and restore it to a normal production
status.

Of course, we did not have a problem with Backup, but we had questions for
which we needed answers. Thans to all your answers.
