PLEASE Call the Help Desk before sending messages about or attempting
repair of Viruses.
--------------------------------------------------------------

For those that are curious, this is technically NOT a virus in the
traditional sense. It is what is known as a 'Worm.' Specifically the
W32.Sircam.Worm.

Where a virus usually does something to data or programs on your drive
(usually bad stuff!) a worm Primarily distributes itself. A worm CAN be
damaging, but this one is not normally damaging in the way we usually
think about a virus. It can be, though due to an error in the code it
has been found pretty benign--see the link below for details.

You DO need to have your computer repaired if you get this worm/virus!
If you have Norton AntiVirus, it should catch it with no problem.
However, installing Norton AFTER you have received it, does not fix it!

The primary damage caused by a worm is in that it creates unnecessary
network traffic by distributing itself to every email address it can
find on your computer. It also may distribute confidential documents on
your computer as attachments! Those email addresses do not have to be
in your address book, as I can attest everyday. This particular worm
also looks at the cache of your web browser, and finds all the email
addresses that are contained in web pages. Since I receive the mail for
[log in to unmask] which is contained on most, if not all of the
university web pages, I get this virus sent to me from all over the
world!!!

If you are interested in the nitty-gritty details here is a link with
