Dr. Ron Smith and Dr. Ossama Saleh of the Mathematics Department were
recently rewarded $32,960 from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission
for the implementation of a five-day professional development workshop.

The funded project, called "Real World and Geometric Applications of
Algebra," is
a workshop that will be held for Hamilton County mathematics teachers.  An
emphasis will be placed on real-world applications and connections with
geometry in the teaching of algebra.  The project is a collaborative effort
between UTC and the Hamilton County Department of Education.  The program
will adress the problems faced by the Hamilton County school system in
mathematics.

Congratulations to Drs. Smith and Saleh on being recognized for their ability
to help improve the quality of education in Hamilton County.
