Dr. Valerie Rutledge of the Teacher Preparation Academy
recently competed for and secured $48,000 from the Tennessee
Higher Education Commission to provide professional development
training for K-12 teachers in the Bradley, Hamilton, Marion, and
Cleveland City school systems.

The training will be in English as a second language. This is in
response to a growing demand for English As a Second Language(ESL)
teachers in the southeastern part of the state. UTC will use the
funding to provide professional development during Summer 2002 for
30 teachers. These teachers will earn six graduate credit hours in
two ESL methods courses taught in an intensive summer institute format.

This program will strengthen the quality of education in Chattanooga and
the surrounding areas. Congratulations to Dr. Rutledge on her work to help
meet the educational demands of the Chattanooga community.
