One possibility for a SIB would be to ask HP to provide assistance
(staff and/or code) to the Open Source Cobol project that is planning
to use the gcc code generator. An open source cobol would help
keep us froo of vendor lock in. A Cobol vendor can offer us
extensions and GUI frameworks and neat features that well justify
the cost, but for those of us that just want to use "plain" cobol,
a GNU Cobol would be very helpful.
I think we should all consider other areas wereh HP making a
contribution to Open Source might be good for us. It also would
help HP fulfill it's claim that it "gets" the open source idea.
