Re the below product....has anyone done this using the font directly from
the 3000 (environment file?), or is this strictly 'download the font to the
PC'....

I think Michael Marxmeier has it about right in his post re. your
alternative solutions. If the old PCL3 printer will accept soft font
downloads (I am not certain that it will), then you could use the same
solution for both printers. Downloading a barcode font is quick and
pretty easy; the fonts are compressed to about 3K to 4K, so there
isn't much of a traffic problem.
You can download a sample PCL Code 39 font from our site to see if the
concept will work for you:
