This sounds a lot like a program I found a while back called TreeSize.
I see now there is a professional version at:

Maybe these folks are who he is having the legal issues with.

I found this when I was checking for a newer version. I've emailed the
author, and he is, not surprisingly, quite tight-lipped about the
"potentially sticky legal issues" for now. But he is also pleased to learn
that others have found it not only useful, but "insanely cool" (to quote
Wirt quoting Gavin), while modest about the accomplishment. He also assures
me that it will continue to work per the release notes. So, if you have it
and like it, hang on to it. If you don't have it, well, google only gives
about 153 hits for it, and not all of those are links to download sites.
