This old MRP application that relies on a big flat file (400K + records)
as the central part number data file was taking almost 3 hours to run on the
new N-class machine, and about 3/4 of an hour on the current production
969 with MPE/iX 6.0. Therefore we were afraid to try ungrading the
operating system on the 969 to 7.0. The problem was solved with the help
of advice from HP and others: attaching the flat file to the Transaction
Manager did the trick, and now MRP runs in less than helf an hour on the
N-class machine.

HP is right, on 6.0 and earlier, there is overhead with attaching a flat file
to the Transaction Manager. On the 969 with MPE/iX 6.0, a simple test
program to update all the records in the flat file takes 21 CPU seconds
on a copy of the file that is not attached, and 48 CPU seconds if the file
is attached.
On the N-class machine with 7.0, the same test program on the same file
takes 220 CPU seconds on the copy that is not attached, and 29 CPU
seconds on the file that is attached.

Just another bit of information, in case someone else has a similar situation.
