Unfortunately, in five years, it ought to quite simple to find a new system
whose performance will approximate or even beat what we have today on MPE.
This is especially true for older systems. But, if Moore's Law holds sway
(does product shipment keep up with Moore's Law?) and what has been
announced actually happens as stated, what you can by come 2006 should offer
at least four times the processing power of the last e3000 sold. And that's
not even taking into account the effects of 64-bitness or faster chips.

a related point: performance.
i get the feeling from some comments here that some think the reason
everyone has been using MPE for so long is that HP3000 users are dim witted
and afraid of change.
i disagree completely... performance is the main reason for sticking with
mpe/image for so long.
