There's a lot more than just "r". You can do
"set -o vi" or "set -o emacs" to get character-based editing on command
lines--you can scroll back and forth through past commands as well as edit
the current command.
You can also set an external editor for command lines, including, with a
little work, qedit or editor.pub.sys.
You can search through past commands for patterns:
history | grep march
Type "help fc" for information
