After the HP announcement this coming Wednesday, any colleges
and universities interested in working together to design and
implement a high quality, Internet/Web inspired customizable, modular,
Academic Information System for Higher Education, please contact me.
If there is sufficient interest and support, we'll put together a
mailing list and start planning.

The goal would be to use well the lessons learned from building
MPE applications for Higher Education. UTC has well over 100
person-years of staff experience in this area and we would like to
work with others to leverage our collective knowledge and skills.

Another goal would be to build applications using open source
technologies that avoid locking into any hardware vendor (and
we avoid as much software locking in as practical).

If an Open Source MPE comes about, we will build on that platform
and leverage a great deal of our collective skills and experience.
This would also ease the migration work a great deal by allowing
an incremental transition to new modules and subsystems by continuing
to use older applications for a period of time.

One avenue to explore would be to join with the JA-SIG group
collaborating with development of Java based applications for
Higher Education. I plan to attend the JA-SIG conference in
Destin, FL, in early December. http://www.ja-sig.org/
