Just a nit, but one that I think can be important.

In the example net use that Lars provided, if you are willing to forgo the
"convenience" of being able to refer to \\invent3k.external.hp.com\user.acct
as X:, you should be able to eliminate the X: from the command line. While
this may be less helpful and less convenient for a server that is described
in so many letters (as a FQDN), I am convinced that one is better off
knowing the UNC, what servers one's shares are on, and what those share
names are, than becoming used to drive letters which are profile specific,
and probably not available "everywhere you want to be". One then would
navigate to, or simply type, the UNC where you would otherwise use the drive
letter.

There is something sad about an IT professional who is left helpless at
another workstation, and can only mutter, "it's on my J drive, on my
machine...".

You might want to map a network drive to Invent3K and edit with Samba
and your favourite PC or Linux editor. The "save as" will then be across
the network (a much more compact transaction than char-by-char in vi).

 net use X: \\invent3k.external.hp.com\user.acct (pw = userpw,acctpw)

Under Linux, you might be able to use smbmount or mount -t smbfs.

Lars.
